Chloe Malle: Welcome to The Run-Through with Vogue. I'm Chloe Malle. Chioma Nnadi: And I'm Chioma Nnadi. And today we're reflecting on the craziness that was 2022. Chloe Malle: The endlessness that was 2022. And of course, the too-shortness that was the White Lotus. Chioma Nnadi: Yes. I'm so sad about that. Chloe Malle: But first, this week's headlines. This week, we wanna talk to you about the breakthrough in nuclear fusion. Just kidding! No one cares about that- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... from us. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: But, we do have other things we wanna discuss, [laughs]. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: So Chioma, on Monday, I feel like we've been, like, "Oh, next week the Golden Globe nominations come out. We're gonna talk about that!" And then it came out, and it was like, mm. It- it reminded me of the scene in Peter Pan when Wendy, like, walks the plank and everyone's waiting for the splash. And then there's no splash. Chioma Nnadi: [inaudible 00:00:51]. It's like, will people even go? I- I- I mean, I'm personally excited about the host. I love Jerrod Carmichael, I watched his special and he's so funny and smart, and such a good get for them. Chloe Malle: Okay, then why does he do it? Chioma Nnadi: Because, I guess since he's a young guy and getting exposure, but- Chloe Malle: [inaudible 00:01:07] good exposure. It just seems like a- Chioma Nnadi: [inaudible 00:01:07] exposure. Chloe Malle: ... lose-lose. Chioma Nnadi: I know. Chloe Malle: Like, I think you get destroyed. Chioma Nnadi: I know. I mean, if I tune in, it's because he's doing it. Chloe Malle: Okay, well, then, that's why he- I guess that's not why he does it, that's why they pick him. But- Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... um, he definitely felt like a hip, cool choice for them- Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... to choose. I just hope he's gettin' a lotta money for that. Chioma Nnadi: I hope so too. Chloe Malle: So, it felt like, very by the book nominations, no huge- Chioma Nnadi: Right. Chloe Malle: ... surprises. Chioma Nnadi: No. Chloe Malle: As everyone knows, the [laughs] Golden Globes took a unceremonious leave of absence last year because it was revealed that, uh, there was absolutely zero diversity- Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This yeah, they have really tried to bulk that up. But, the news of it was the no-newsness of it. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: However, from a Vogue perspective, there are definitely some red carpet renegades that I'm very excited to see. Chioma Nnadi: Yes, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: I mean, Zendaya is nominated for Euphoria. Chioma Nnadi: Right. Chloe Malle: Ugh, Cate Blanchett for Tár. Chioma Nnadi: I mean, I- Chloe Malle: So I mean- Chioma Nnadi: Cate probably will be my most favorite. I mean, always wins. Chloe Malle: And I hope she doesn't only wear Armani, but I- I have- Chioma Nnadi: Right, yeah, true. Chloe Malle: No, no, I have faith in her. Michelle Williams always looks good. Chioma Nnadi: She does. Chloe Malle: I mean, a little too tasteful, but- Chioma Nnadi: Right. Always good. Chloe Malle: ... always good. Um, Margot Robbie, she's nominated for Babylon, which is the Damien Chazelle which got a ton of nominations. It's not out yet, so I feel like- Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... it's, I don't know, and I'm excited about that. Um. Chioma Nnadi: I know. All of the nominations felt like they just happened yesterday. Like, I can't believe, like, Wednesday got a n- a- Chloe Malle: Uh, y- s- and like, White Lotus. I'm like- Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... how did you all see this fast enough? Chioma Nnadi: I know, I know. Chloe Malle: Um, Aubrey Plaza and Jennifer Coolidge got nominated for White Lotus. Chioma Nnadi: Love. Wanna see what Jennifer wears on the red carpet. Chloe Malle: Oh, there you go. Chioma Nnadi: Yep. Chloe Malle: Julia Garner got nominated both for Inventing Anna and Ozarks, which- Chioma Nnadi: Uh-huh, okay. Chloe Malle: ... I'm a big fan of hers, so I thought that was impressive. Chioma Nnadi: Yep. Chloe Malle: And, I'm like you. I feel like a lotta these movies just came out, I haven't had a chance to see anything. So for me, I th- I think Christmas break for me is gonna be a lot of movie catch-up. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. What else is in the headline? Chloe Malle: World Cup. Chioma Nnadi: Oh, World Cup. World Cup. Chloe Malle: So, this World Cup has been very contentious. Chioma Nnadi: Yes. Chloe Malle: There's been a lot of debate from- there was a whole New York Times article about how to pronounce Qatar. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: So it- like, it got to the point where people were- just wanted to argue about everything. I feel like it's so rare now, with streaming and having everything on DVR, that there is a collective TV moment. Chioma Nnadi: Mm. Chloe Malle: And walking around the streets of New York City on a recent Saturday, even in freezing cold, people were like, spilling out of bars, people were watching- Chioma Nnadi: Mm-hmm. Chloe Malle: ... on big screens in Times Square. You saw, you know, images from all over the globe of people really coming together. And I guess that's always the case for the World Cup, but it felt- Chioma Nnadi: Not so much in the- I don't know. In America. I mean, in the UK, coming from- Chloe Malle: Totally. Chioma Nnadi: ... a- a soccer-loving country, basically the streets are empty when there's a big game and there's an in-home game. Chloe Malle: Right. Chioma Nnadi: So, it was insane. Chloe Malle: I mean, I think also, last weekend, uh, for people who live under a rock- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... uh, Morocco was triumphant over Portugal. Chioma Nnadi: Right. Chloe Malle: Portugal has Cristiano Ronaldo, they are a very established- Chioma Nnadi: Mm-hmm. Chloe Malle: ... um, favorite, often winning team. And Morocco won, and they became sort of the hope of both the Arab world and Africa. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: They started to sort of symbolize so many groups and nations that had never had anyone progress that far in the World Cup. Chioma Nnadi: Right. Chloe Malle: So you really felt like everyone was rooting for Morocco. I'm- like, on a WhatsApp mom's chat with, like, a- a lotta Brooklyn moms and a lot of them are French, and a lot of them are not, and everyone was worked up about this. Chioma Nnadi: Huh. Chloe Malle: And- and it's like, usually like, what do I do when a baby has a stuffy nose and you can't get it out? And instead it was like, "[French 00:04:42], Go Morocco!" So I just like- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... love when it sort of transcends different groups. Chioma Nnadi: Who- so who's in the Final? Chloe Malle: Unfortunately Morocco lost to France. I mean, I g- I shouldn't say that, I'm half French. But, um- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... for the underdog narrative, it is- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... it was less climactic that, uh, Morocco lost to France today, and ap- and apparently I didn't watch. According to my husband, it was not a thrilling game. France squeaked by. So, France won, uh, last World Cup in Russia, and they are comin' in hot with two young stars that people love, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, whereas Argentina is really holding- holding steady to, you know, Messi, who's probably- Chioma Nnadi: Right. Chloe Malle: ... the most famous soccer player in the world right now. Chioma Nnadi: Right. Chloe Malle: But is a little over the hill, in- Chioma Nnadi: Hmm. Chloe Malle: ... in the sports world. So it'll be an interesting cross-generational, uh, moment on the field. Chioma Nnadi: And a nice way to end the year. Chloe Malle: Yeah. And the final is on Sunday. Chioma Nnadi: Right. So, Chloe. Chloe Malle: Chioma. Chioma Nnadi: Exciting news. We have other people in the studio with us today, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: I feel like we're like, Brie Larson in Room. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: Like, bring another human, [laughs]. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. So, which is super exciting, and they're here to talk about, what else but year-end review. Chloe Malle: Ugh, thrilling. Can't wait to hear w- the youth weigh in. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe, it's so fun to have some other people in the studio with us. Chloe Malle: I know, it's made me realize how empty this room feels usually. Chioma Nnadi: I know, [laughs]. So, uh, we've got Emma Specter here, um, Vogue.com's culture writer, to talk to us about all of the top culture stories; Elise Taylor is joining us too to talk about Royals, our Royal expert; and José Criales-Unzueta to talk about fashion this year. So, welcome everyone. José Criales-Unzueta: Thank you. Thank you for having us. [laughs]. Emma Specter: We thank you. Chioma Nnadi: So, I'm gonna pick on you, Emma, first. What were your top moments of the year? Emma Specter: So my, I think, top moment of the year to write about and just to witness was the return of Bennifer. Chioma Nnadi: Hmm. Emma Specter: Uh, I feel like there's- José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs]. ... so much toxic stuff coming back from the '90s and early aughts. Like, I don't need a low-rise jeans comeback, I don't need the thin mentality comeback, but I do need- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Emma Specter: ... Ben and Jen to be going to a Dunkin' Donuts. Elise Taylor: Or a Starbucks. Emma Specter: I am personally very upset to see them going to Starbucks. If I know- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Emma Specter: ... Ben Affleck as well as I think I do- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Emma Specter: ... he's not a Dunkin' man. But, you know, I don't wanna knee-jerk blame Jen, maybe they as a couple are finding a new couples' Coffee Style, and that's great. Chloe Malle: I did love how all of the headlines were like, Ben Affleck cheating on Dunkin', [laughs]. It was very compelling. Emma Specter: It's upsetting. I mean, taking a Massachusetts man away from Dunkin' Donuts is- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Emma Specter: ... a really bold move. Um, but, you know, people grow. Chioma Nnadi: I'm curious to ask about whether y- what- how you feel about her taking his name. Do you think this is- did this upset you, did you embrace it? I know, um- Emma Specter: Well, I don't- I don't care at all. Chioma Nnadi: ... Chloe had some thoughts, [laughs]. Emma Specter: Did you know I re- I usually can get angry about anything. Within the broader context of like, people often changing names for a variety of reasons, you know, gender reasons, marriage reasons, having kids. Chloe Malle: That's a good point. Emma Specter: I- it's just a thing I don't care that much about. I'm like, "It's your name." But I- there's a lot there. I'm curious to your thoughts. Chloe Malle: Ugh, I- I don't know. I just- I like- I like when people keep their identity. I don't think you need to just be, you know. Emma Specter: No. Chloe Malle: Melding all the time to, uh, whoever your marriage license is. But, you know, I- Emma Specter: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... I- l- to each to their own. And- and you know what? I think more than being Mrs. Affleck, she's now gonna be one half of Bennifer. So, I support the- Emma Specter: Mm-hmm. Chloe Malle: ... portmanteau. Emma Specter: Completely agree, and I also think, for someone like J-Lo to take her husband's name, she's obviously always gonna be J-Lo. Chloe Malle: Yes. It's sort of a punk move- Emma Specter: Like, it's a different- Chloe Malle: ... for her, because obviously- Mm-hmm. ... she's never gonna be Mrs. Affleck. Chioma Nnadi: No. She knows that. Emma Specter: Yeah. Chloe Malle: All right, Emma, what's number two? Emma Specter: Number two was, I think, the surprising reemergence of Nora Ephron into the cultural dialog. The infamous salad dressing recipe? Chioma Nnadi: Oh, my goodness, yeah. Chloe Malle: Oh, I like that. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Emma Specter: Yeah. Yeah, that was posted by Olivia Wilde, sort of under duress after her ex-husband, Jason Sudeikis, kinda made public that she had taken their family salad dressing and left. Chloe Malle: I thought the nanny said that. Emma Specter: I'm sorry, yes, the nanny said that he had said that to her, so that is in a nutshell. Chloe Malle: Okay. Emma Specter: The funny thing about Olivia posting the salad dressing was it was sort of a confirmation of the nanny's plans, which they had otherwise denied, so I was- I mean, I don't think it confirmed all the claims, it confirmed- Chloe Malle: Hmm. Emma Specter: ... that she makes a special salad dressing, which is, [laughs]- Chioma Nnadi: Not so special, by the way. It is so basic. Emma Specter: ... so [inaudible 00:09:41]. Not- yeah, not so special. Chioma Nnadi: It's perhaps the most basic salad dressing. Chloe Malle: What's amazing about that is like, I feel like some people were like, "Ugh, all this news has been so good for Don't Worry Darling, and it's just gonna make everyone see this movie." It's like, nope. It made me rewatch Heartburn, hadn't seen that in a long time. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: It's- it was a great moment for- for any Ephron stan. Emma Specter: Great moment for Ephron stans, great year for Florence Pugh, I think. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah, love Florence. Chloe Malle: So the salad dressing came out, that was part of an ongoing Olivia style saga. But now, they've broken up. Emma Specter: Yeah. Chloe Malle: Do we feel like this is the end of them being headlines for us, or do we feel like there's a, like, an Act 2 of Harry and Olivia? Emma Specter: I hope not. I mean, another, you know, someone has young children and there's perhaps some- a lot of issues at play. I'm like, I feel bad, you know, lapping up this content, like, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: I know. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Emma Specter: A little, but- but not bad enough not to do it, let's be clear. Chloe Malle: [laughs], just conflicted, [laughs]. Emma Specter: I do [inaudible 00:10:36] that. The salad dressing was sort of Olivia taking the narrative and making it fun. Chloe Malle: Yeah. Emma Specter: In a way that I felt a little less guilty, like, reading the Daily Mail, [laughs], accounts of them- Chloe Malle: Yeah. Emma Specter: ... [inaudible 00:10:47]. Chloe Malle: Yeah. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: All right, Elise. I need a lot of Royals expert feedback, which is- Chioma Nnadi: It's been a big year- Chloe Malle: ... what I'm hoping- Chioma Nnadi: ... for the Royal Family, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... from you. Elise Taylor: It has been a- a big year. I- you know, at first, I didn't think anything could beat 2020, which, when Harry and Meghan left the Royal Family. Then, I didn't think anything could beat 2021, where they gave their explosive Oprah interview. And 2022 has proved to be the most, um, significant and chaotic year yet. Um, I think the Royal Family just occupies such an interesting place in the culture, where at one point, you know, they are political figures. You know, King Charles is the head of state, and, you know, we saw the Queen this year who- who died, be treated with the utmost respect as the head of state, and we saw the traditions and the formalities that went along with that. But then at the same time, they're also kind of part of the entertainment industry. Chloe Malle: Mm-hmm. Elise Taylor: Which is that, you know, we read about their love lives, we read about their children's, and we read about their scandals. And 2022 is kind of the year where all of that just really collided in a very, you know, fascinating way, and a- a very busy way, for me, but, you know. Chloe Malle: So I heard that all the New York Post's articles about Harry and Meghan being pissed, and just all the unrest around the making of this doc- uh, series was true. Have you heard anything about, like, are they happy with this, are they furious? Do you think it's good TV? Like, what- w- what makes you feel- how do you feel when you're watching this? Elise Taylor: So, you know, Meghan had, uh, spoken out previously that, you know, it's not the way they necessarily would have told their own story and that it's tricky, uh, you know, to have someone else who's in charge of your na- narrative. In this case- Chloe Malle: Well, and not just anyone, Liz Garbus. Elise Taylor: Yes, Liz Garbus. Chloe Malle: I mean, this is a- the- one of the number one documentarians. She's usually focusing on like, incarceration, voter rights, Nina Simone, Jacques Cousteau. This is like, lowbrow Garbus is really good. Elise Taylor: Yeah. Chloe Malle: I'm sort of into it. It's- it's like, Kardashians by Liz Garbus. Elise Taylor: And, you know, I think, um, the first part of the documentary, it- it wasn't that groundbreaking in the sense that most of the things they'd already talking about, uh, they'd already told Oprah. But it sounds like Part 2 is- is really when we're gonna start to get some new information that she's pulling out of this couple that they may have not, you know, thought they were ever gonna share. Chloe Malle: Right. Elise Taylor: So, we will- I cannot wait to watch it- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Elise Taylor: ... and see, you know, what Liz Garbus gets out of this couple, and, you know, what the ramifications of that mean for both Harry and Meghan, and the monarchy. Chloe Malle: How does this reflect on William and Kate? Like, they just had their first US tour in eight years, and it just felt like kind of a drop in- like, it felt like a ripple not a splash. Like, do people think they're boring now, just 'cause they're rule followers? Elise Taylor: You know, they're following a very different playbook than Harry and Meghan, which is that, you know, they are- Chloe Malle: Just that they're following one? Elise Taylor: ... [laughs]. You know, they essentially are, you know, doing the old British adage of keeping calm and carrying on. You know, they are, you know, one of the other Royals things that often really comes up is never complain, never explain. And I think that's what w- they're seeing, is that, so far, we just haven't heard anything from them. Chloe Malle: Right. Elise Taylor: So, we have heard nothing. They are not indulging in this conversation publicly. Will that change when the documentary airs their explosive second half? We will see. Chioma Nnadi: Well, I mean, José, tell us a little bit more about what's coming this week from Vogue Runway? José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. So, you know, in the past few weeks, Vogue Runway has been hard at work trying to identify what the biggest fashion moments of the year are. This is always such a fun exercise I feel, because it's really just about identifying pop culture moments, identifying the biggest designer news, runway news, model news. Um, so yeah, we have a really big story dropping with our 19 top moments of the year. So I feel like we've done a good job of- of thinking about how to get- condense these- José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. ... moments. Chloe Malle: Well, I'd say, I opened, uh, my email earlier, and I am not- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... a- uh, I would say, primarily a fashion person, and I read these, and I was like, "Ooh! This is fun! I'm excited." José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs]. Uh, it's just the José and Chioma's top eight moments of, uh, 2022. So let's- let's, uh, let's hear them from you guys. Chioma Nnadi: I mean, it's- it's kind of a li- a mini awards show, of sorts, right? 'Cause we're giving out awards. Chloe Malle: This is- José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. ... kind of. José Criales-Unzueta: It's our little superlatives, you know? It's like a little awards show. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs], yeah. Okay, so, first off, who were the designers who really had the b- rocked this year? Who- who had the best year ever, in your opinion? José Criales-Unzueta: You know, Glenn Martens had an amazing year. Mm-hmm. José Criales-Unzueta: Between D-Cell and his Jean Paul Gaultier Couture collaboration in January, and his own work at Y/Project, he really just fully, like, blew up, and really went into the mainstream this year, I feel. Chloe Malle: I mean, I- I have to admit, I'd never heard of Glenn Martens. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: See, most people- Get to know that name! Chloe Malle: I've worked at Vogue for over 10 years, and I was like- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... "I don't know who this person is, [laughs]." José Criales-Unzueta: Listen. Chioma Nnadi: Remember that name, because- Chloe Malle: Okay. José Criales-Unzueta: Exactly. Chioma Nnadi: ... he will get even bigger in 2023. Chloe Malle: Is he a young guy, is he a new designer? Is this just, I've been under a rock? José Criales-Unzueta: No, he's been around for- Chioma Nnadi: He's [inaudible 00:15:46]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... I wa- I wanna say, like, a decade now, right? Like, Y/Project- Chloe Malle: All right, no excuse. José Criales-Unzueta: ... started ... Chioma Nnadi: Right. Chloe Malle: But he's pretty young. I would still put him in- José Criales-Unzueta: He's pretty young, yeah. ... the young- young category. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. No, and he really, like, started becoming more of a name ver- in the past, I wanna say like, three years? You know, the Y/Project really became a thing. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: Rihanna is a big fan. Chloe Malle: Well, if Rihanna's a fan. José Criales-Unzueta: Exactly. But this was hi- his year. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah, you mea- you- you just- his- uh, those UGG boo- those crazy y- thigh-high UGG boots were- José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. ... maybe have- have kind of, you know, crossed over into the mainstream culture. Chloe Malle: I thought the- Chioma Nnadi: You might remember those. Chloe Malle: ... cool UGG boot was the very tiny, short one. That's different? José Criales-Unzueta: Well, there's two. Okay. José Criales-Unzueta: If you asked Bella Hadid- Chioma Nnadi: There- there's two. José Criales-Unzueta: ... it's a tiny, short one. Chloe Malle: Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: If you ask Rihanna, it's a- Okay. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... massive, Y/Project one. So, it depends on the- Chloe Malle: Yeah, yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: ... kind of girl, you know? [laughs]. But yeah, he had a- Different UGGs for different girls. Chioma Nnadi: Exactly, [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... ye- yeah. He went from very, if you know you know, to really, fully, just one of the- Chloe Malle: Okay. José Criales-Unzueta: ... designers to watch. Right? Chioma Nnadi: Yeah, I mean, he made Diesel- I think Diesel's kind of hot again, right? When was- when were- José Criales-Unzueta: Oh, yeah. ... when was anyone talking about Diesel before- Chloe Malle: Seriously. Chioma Nnadi: ... you know, Glenn? José Criales-Unzueta: Seriously, it's been years. It's like, yeah. Yeah. I mean, he was on- José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. ... he's on your- he's on your breakout list, right, on your rockstar designer list? José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. He's the other big name, Matthieu had such an amazing year. His knockout, um, debut at Bottega earlier this year, you know, everything he's done since, I mean, everyone's gagging. I'm- personally, I'm living for it. He's really had an amazing year. [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: He went from bei- really being in sort of the backdrop, having worked for so many people including Phoebe Philo, including Raf Simons, to now being, like, in the forefront of a brand. And it's really just such an amazing story too, to just see someone step up. Chloe Malle: Well, th- speaking of stepping up, well, who- Chioma Nnadi: Who was stepping off? Chloe Malle: ... who's stepping off, that we're- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... most gutted about? José Criales-Unzueta: Mm-hmm. So, Alessandro left Gucci, definitely the end of an era. I mean, he was a- Alessandro Michele. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: ... Gucci [inaudible 00:17:30]. Yes, Alessandro Michele left Gucci. Chloe Malle: Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: Um, Raf Simons, this happened- Chioma Nnadi: So [inaudible 00:17:34]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... in the same week, which was crazy, in the fashion- Chloe Malle: Big week. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: ... news world, [laughs], you know? Thanksgiving week, end of November, Raf Simons also announced he was shutting his label, after 27 years. It literally had- it's my age, which, I was like, "Oh wow." Chloe Malle: Yeah, [laughs]. But- José Criales-Unzueta: The 20- "It's the 27 club." Chioma Nnadi: You baby. José Criales-Unzueta: Uh, [laughs]. Y- but yeah, Raf's been able to join the 27 club. The funniest part is that he announced on an Instagram post, which is a very- Chloe Malle: Oh, wow. José Criales-Unzueta: ... just 2022 thing to do. There wasn't a- Chioma Nnadi: True. Chloe Malle: ... press release? That's fascinating, that it's like, shifted that much. José Criales-Unzueta: I know, and we actually wrote a story, uh, breaking the news, and, you know, we reached out to their PR and they were like, "Nope, this is it. This is the announcement, this is the press release, this is the thing." You know, it was a short- Wow. José Criales-Unzueta: ... Instagram post. Very interesting. And of course, Tom Ford sold his brand to Esteé Lauder Companies for $2.8 billion. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Yep. Yeah, securing the bag. Tom Ford really, really- José Criales-Unzueta: He did that. ... [inaudible 00:18:23], [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: Oh, that deal. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. Chioma Nnadi: Woo, a billion-dollar deal. That was- José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. ... I mean, I think people were- it was big news. Chloe Malle: It was impressive. José Criales-Unzueta: Massive news, yeah. And it had been circling around for so long, you know, at his September show, we kinda already knew that he was selling it but no one knew to who. And then all of a sudden, you know, s- Chioma Nnadi: Wow. Okay. So, one of my favorite awards of the year. Who was our style renegade of the year? José Criales-Unzueta: I mean- [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... you've gotta give it to Rihanna. You know, our May cover star. Of course, who else? [laughs]. Chloe Malle: I mean, isn't she always the star renegade- José Criales-Unzueta: Exactly. ... of the year? Chioma Nnadi: As a- undisputed, probably for- [laughs] s- since she came onto the stage. José Criales-Unzueta: I was gonna say. Chloe Malle: We can- we can meet here 12 months from now, and it'll be- José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs]. ... the same conversation, [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: For sure. Chioma Nnadi: José, tell us why this year? Like, 'cause this, I think, was a really significant year in Rihanna world. José Criales-Unzueta: Exactly. So, you know, we all call Rihanna a mother. She is a mother. But this year, she actually became- [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... a mom, you know? She had her first- [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... her first child with A$AP Rocky. But the way she announced her pregnancy, we all had heard about it, but early February, she po- she posted an Instagram photo, and it was a street style photo shot by- Hmm. José Criales-Unzueta: ... um, Diggzy, the paparazzo, you know? And we were all just living for it, 'cause- Chloe Malle: With a bare belly in February. José Criales-Unzueta: With a bare belly. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: Like, I shivered looking. José Criales-Unzueta: Vintage Chanel puffer. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Uh, I mean, all of them. José Criales-Unzueta: You know, [inaudible 00:19:34] vintage Chanel puffer, Christian LaCroix jewelry. Ugh. Chloe Malle: She was committed. Chioma Nnadi: Sublime. José Criales-Unzueta: And I mean, [inaudible 00:19:42]. Committed. And I mean, she's always- Chloe Malle: Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: ... committed to street style, right? And she- the reason why she's our style renegade of the year is because she shifted the entire conversation about pregnancy style forever, I feel. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. She really, really did. And- and honestly, without hitting the red carpet, really. I mean, she went- José Criales-Unzueta: Mm-hmm. ... to a lot of shows. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. But she really didn't do- do- she was kind of absent from big red carpet w- events, and still managed to win our- our style renegade of the year. José Criales-Unzueta: Exactly. I mean- [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... you've gotta give it to Rihanna. Rihanna, we stan forever. Yes. José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs]. Always. Okay. This leads us nicely into most divisive- Chloe Malle: Ugh. Chioma Nnadi: ... dress of the year. José Criales-Unzueta: Mm-hmm. Dress that, uh, I can say with my hand on my heart that Chloe hated. José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: That's true. José Criales-Unzueta: Listen. Chioma Nnadi: Please reveal, please reveal. José Criales-Unzueta: Please reveal. Uh, 'cause we don't need to guess, [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: I mean, right? I feel like everyone already knows. Kim Kardashian wearing- Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: ... the Happy Birthday Mr. President Marilyn Monroe dress. Yep. Chloe Malle: Which is now ruined with Pete Davidson's [inaudible 00:20:39] on it. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: Oh, my God. But, you know, it's true, it was the most divisive and talked about dress of the year. We were talking about, you know, like, how to approach writing about it, 'cause it's- it's obviously- Mm-hmm. José Criales-Unzueta: ... one of those unmissable moments this year. And part of the conversation is that you have to acknowledge that Kim is an icon, right, is an icon- Mm-hmm. José Criales-Unzueta: ... of pop culture today. Whether, like, the girls are living for it or not, but she is. And then on the other end of the conversation, you have to also acknowledge that, like, what's the need of taking this dress, that is such an intrinsic part of fashion and style history, and just wearing it again? I definitely can go both ways about it. But I- part of me just wishes that you would've, you know, left the dress alone, [laughs]. [laughs]. Chloe Malle: Ugh. Chioma Nnadi: Part of me does not wish that. I think it was a really good move. I think it was a really brave move. Chloe Malle: Yeah. Chioma Nnadi: I mean. José Criales-Unzueta: I mean, and she shut down the red carpet, right? She was the last one. Yeah. She did what she had to do. She did what she had to do. She got- Chloe Malle: Did she have to do it? Chioma Nnadi: No, but like, you know, she wanted to. She wanted to- Chloe Malle: Ugh. I mean, I want a- Chioma Nnadi: ... she always wants to be- Chloe Malle: ... lot of things, Chioma. Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. We're always gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. José Criales-Unzueta: If anything, we- we can take away from this, is that the access to fashion that Kim has gained over the years is- Yeah. Unparalleled. José Criales-Unzueta: ... you know, unparalleled by now. Chloe Malle: That's true. That's a good takeaway. Chioma Nnadi: But question, what is Kim going to wear in 2023, now that she is no longer wearing Balenciaga? That is the big question. Chloe Malle: Oh, that is- José Criales-Unzueta: That is the big question. Chioma Nnadi: Our big question, [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: You know, during our [inaudible 00:21:56]- A big question. José Criales-Unzueta: ... you actually start seeing- I know. I wasn't quite sure. José Criales-Unzueta: ... like, they're- they're trying to switch it up. Yeah. Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: I was like- It was a little- it's been a rocky start, I would say. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. You know, actually, when she went to the Prada Men's show earlier this year, I was like, "Oh, I can- I can get into this." But I do like her in Rick. She's been wearing- Chloe Malle: Did she wear Men's Prada? José Criales-Unzueta: ... Rick Owens a lot. She wore Men's Prada. Chioma Nnadi: She wa- Prada. Yeah. Chloe Malle: Oh, that's cool. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. But she wears Rick here and there. Um, so I could also see her as a Rick Owens girl, you know? Chioma Nnadi: Yeah, I like that for her. Chloe Malle: I mean, the Met is gonna be- Chioma Nnadi: [inaudible 00:22:25] person. Chloe Malle: ... a problem for her. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: How is she ever gonna live up to that dress? Chioma Nnadi: I dunno, she'll figure it out. José Criales-Unzueta: She'll fi- she always does, [laughs]. I feel like she always does. Yeah. Chloe Malle: No, I'm holding my breath. Chioma Nnadi: She'll pull out the- the dress Chanel wore [inaudible 00:22:38]. Chloe Malle: Yeah, exactly. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah, [laughs]. Chioma Nnadi: I don't know. Chloe Malle: Coco rolling in her grave. Chioma Nnadi: Exactly. José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs], ah. Coco is definitely rolling in her grave. Coco probably wore- I mean, [inaudible 00:22:47] be able to do that. I think that will be- yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: Sacrilegious. No one's gonna be touching Coco's- yeah, exactly. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah. Chloe Malle: Last category, most divisive TV character's wardrobe. José Criales-Unzueta: I mean, Portia in White Lotus. I never saw so many Twitter think pieces, Instagram story take-downs, TikTok- [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: ... reviews of a single, like, supporting character in a TV show than Portia. I know. This poor, lost girl. It just- José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs]. ... destroyed the Internet, [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah, and she was going through it in [inaudible 00:23:19]. Chioma Nnadi: [inaudible 00:23:19] people were so- like, what was it about her that really, all of her character, all her outfits that- that really got people talking? 'Cause I've never seen anything like it. Obviously, we know the show was popular, but who knew that the conversation would be this- Chloe Malle: It just was, like- Chioma Nnadi: ... intense. Chloe Malle: ... pure social media chaos, distilled- Chioma Nnadi: Right. José Criales-Unzueta: Yeah, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... into one character's outfits. Chioma Nnadi: Yeah. Chloe Malle: And actually, I interviewed Haley Lu Richardson, who plays Portia, for the show, and she had a lot to say about Portia's outfits. One of the bucket hats that she wore got a- maybe the most viral hate, and that was- Chioma Nnadi: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: ... something she crocheted herself. José Criales-Unzueta: Oh, my God. Chioma Nnadi: No way. Chloe Malle: She has a- she has a crochet Etsy shop called Hooked by Haley, where she makes, like, super sort of loving hands at home, uh, jewelry and crochet hats. And she said she traveled to Sicily with a bagful of yarn and didn't end up making anything, [laughs]. Chioma Nnadi: Wow. You couldn't make this shit up, seriously. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. José Criales-Unzueta: I love that. Chioma Nnadi: You couldn't make this stuff up. Yeah. José Criales-Unzueta: You really can't. Chloe Malle: Yeah. Chioma Nnadi: So. Chloe Malle: Get ready for some hot takes from Haley Lu. José Criales-Unzueta: [laughs], can't wait to hear. Haley Lu Richardson: Hello. Chloe Malle: Hi Haley, how are you? Haley Lu Richardson: I'm so sorry. Chloe Malle: [laughs], that's okay. Haley Lu Richardson: Somehow I got a COVID test and Vogue [laughs] confused, [laughs], with each other. Chloe Malle: Wow. Well, that's- that's offensive. Haley Lu Richardson: As th- I know- I know it's- I don't know how that's a possibility, but I'm- I'm really sorry. Chloe Malle: We never wanna be confused for a COVID test, [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: A COVID test, I know. You guys are very different, trust me, I'm aware of it. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: I'm very aware. Chloe Malle: Wait, tell me about your, uh, Zoom name being "h poopy"? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, is that my Zo- Zoom name on this one? Chloe Malle: Yeah, [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: I just made it that 'cause over COVID, I was doing- I teach this dance class at the gym across the street from my house, and over COVID, Zoom started becoming a thing and then I was doing the dance class over Zoom and I just decided I had to do something, like, fun and random. And then, the pandemic lasted so long, and then all my, like, official Zoom work meetings were over Zoom and it was the same name, and then- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... maybe I lo- I might have lost some jobs because of it, I don't know. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Okay, so Haley, we wanna hear everything about the finale. Everyone's, like, still hot from this. Tell me when you found out who was gonna die? Was it at the beginning, or was this, like, a well-kept secret? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh yeah, it was at the beginning. Um, 'cause we got all seven episodes before- Chloe Malle: Oh, you did. Haley Lu Richardson: ... yes. Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: And then we also shot all seven episodes completely out of order, like a giant- Chloe Malle: Got it. Haley Lu Richardson: ... movie. Um, which was complicated. But, uh, somehow we did it. So I knew what happened with everything, before my first day filming. Chloe Malle: That's amazing that you shot it out of order, though. Was that a weird experience? Like, what was the first thing you shot? Haley Lu Richardson: My very first day, I made out with two guys. I made out with- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... Adam and Leo, on my first day, and one make out was from, like, episode two, and one was from, like, four or five or something. I literally was in every scene that first day I worked, and each scene was from a different episode. So, it was- Chloe Malle: Wow. Haley Lu Richardson: ... very ... For me, I like, took all of Portia's scenes from all seven episodes and put them in a binder in order, and just focused on, like, Portia as if it was her own, like, mini movie of Portia. Chloe Malle: Okay. Okay, the Portia movies. Haley Lu Richardson: Um. The Portia movie, [laughs]. I'm sure everyone wants to see that. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: But, uh, but um, uh, yeah. It was a lot. It was like, an 800-page movie that we did over five months. Chloe Malle: Wow. So you moved to Sicily for five months. Were you staying at that hotel? Haley Lu Richardson: I was one of the ones that didn't stay in the hotel because I really wanted a kitchen, and I also had my cat with me. Chloe Malle: Oh, wow, your cat came from LA? Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah, he's a great- Chloe Malle: Tell us. Haley Lu Richardson: ... traveler. Chloe Malle: Really? Tell us about him. Haley Lu Richardson: Like, he's so good. His name is Darbin and I just got him tattooed on my leg last night, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: Wow. Haley Lu Richardson: He's my soulmate. Yeah. Chloe Malle: I'm sorry, is it his name tattooed, or his visage? Haley Lu Richardson: I got his whole body. Chloe Malle: Oh, wow. Haley Lu Richardson: There's actually a photo, there's a photo that I took of him in Sicily, in my villa apartment. But, um, I took this photo of him because we would, you know, have a glass of wine together every night, and then I- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... and, uh, he like, sits like a human, and I- there was him sitting in this, like, big chair that I had in the living room. And I put my wine next to him, and he literally looks like an Italian man after a long day's work. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. What kind of cat is he? Haley Lu Richardson: He's a Scottish Fold cat. Chloe Malle: Oh, wow. Haley Lu Richardson: So his little- Chloe Malle: They're the most beautiful. Haley Lu Richardson: I know. And he has long fluffy hair and- and, uh, he just kinda sits, and he looks like Ron Swanson from Parks & Rec, and he just drinks wine with me. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: I don't actually give me cat wine. Chloe Malle: What was like, the post-shooting activity? Like, were different groups hanging out, were there parties, was it social? Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah, it was social. You know, I think it's always a great thing when you can have, like, because you share such a intimacy, in- in- in a way with these actors and the whole crew, honestly, because we show up on set and, like, it- there's all these creative people, you know, creat- making something and trying to collaborate. And then also as an actor, you just have to be like, so vulnerable, and like, just immediately on the first day, there's like, you know, a hundred crew around you. It's like, mostly [laughs] middle-aged men, and you have to somehow, like, be able to, um, like, feel your truest things in front of them, immediately. Chloe Malle: Right. Haley Lu Richardson: So it's always great when you make friends with these people and you feel like you can trust them and have, like, a real safety with them. And I think part of, like, building that camaraderie is, uh, is, you know, friendship and hanging out and being able to just, like, relax and have fun, off-set. So, yeah, we- we hang out. Chloe Malle: Who became your bestie, or a few? Haley Lu Richardson: My bestie is Adam. Adam's- Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: ... Adam was like, day one, he's my bestie. And he's actually going to be one of my best friends for the rest of my life. Chloe Malle: Oh, that's cute. Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. I really love that guy. He's one of the best guys I've ever met. Chloe Malle: Did you watch Season 1 of White Lotus when it aired, or w- did you, like, catch up later when you got the script? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, yeah, I watched it when it was coming out with the- with the rest of the world, [laughs]. I was, uh- Chloe Malle: Did you think, I wanna be Jennifer Coolidge's number two next season? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, man. Like, well, I didn't even think, 'cause I just thought- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... actually, I had gotten an audition to play, uh, the daughter that Sydney Sweeney plays. Chloe Malle: Oh, wow. Haley Lu Richardson: I forget her name now, but. Chloe Malle: That's cool. Haley Lu Richardson: Olivia, is that her name? Chloe Malle: Yeah. Uh, maybe. Haley Lu Richardson: Olivia. Chloe Malle: It sounds right. Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. I got the audition, but I couldn't do the audition, because like, the second I got the audition, I had just signed onto this other- this movie that was filming at the same time and I had already committed to this movie and I was really excited about it. But I was like, I had been wanting to work with Mike for so long. And, um, I was just like, so heartbroken in a way that, like, it- it- it wasn't the right time. Like, I- I couldn't even audition. I couldn't even give myself a chance. Um. Chloe Malle: The stars aligned for Portia. Haley Lu Richardson: But then, you know, I ha- yeah, the stars aligned for Portia. I had no idea there was gonna be a Season 2, I had no idea Jennifer was gonna come back. And then like, when I got the audition and it was to play Jennifer's assistant, I was like, "Okay, this is pretty epic." Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: [laughs]. It was pretty ideal, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: And what was it like, did you know Mike before, or you were just a fan of his? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, just a fan. I'd never met him personally, but I had sent him a love note, [laughs], um, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: After White Lotus one- Haley Lu Richardson: Uh, and- Chloe Malle: ... or from something else? Haley Lu Richardson: Before. Actually, uh, well, I'd known of, you know, his work for a long time and- but then after I saw Brad's Status, did you see that movie? Chloe Malle: No. Haley Lu Richardson: It's a really good movie. It's one of my favorites. Uh, it's with Ben Stiller and Austin Abrams- Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: ... and it's just such a great story. Um, and it's so, like, grounded and funny and spiritual, and like, I don't know, it's just so great. And the tone of that movie was like, I remember watching that movie and being like, "That's the kind of projects I wanna be in, and those are the kinda stories I wanna tell." Like, and, yeah. Chloe Malle: Wow. So you wrote him a fan letter? Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah, [laughs]. And then I- Chloe Malle: Amazing. Haley Lu Richardson: ... uh, I also manifested working with him, like, through multiple manifestation techniques, such as- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... a scripting letter. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: And tell me about the first time you actually met him, because I- I read somewhere that there were tears involved. Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, yeah. I did a Zoom audition with him, and then after I got the job, I did just a Zoom with him talking about Portia and his ideas with this character and what I felt like I could bring to her, and like, really get on the same page with that. But then the first time I met him in person was actually in Sicily. Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: And I was just so overwhelmed, because whenever I start a new job, I feel like I don't know how to act. Like, I feel like I've never done it and I feel like I'm gonna fail. And I feel like, once I start filming, the confidence comes back, and like, it clicks. But before it starts, there's just so much anxiety for me. And, uh, I had, you know, done, like, a 30-hour day of travel with my cat, and then the next day I met Mike. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: And it was raining in Sicily and I didn't know where I was, and my phone service wasn't working to direct me to the hotel and I was walking in the rain. And a car almost hit me, and I had my period. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: And then I walked into the hotel. And then, the AD was directing me to the room that Mike was in, and I was saying, like, "Hey, I'm really overwhelmed. Can I just go to the bathroom for a second before I see Mike", because I could feel myself, like, starting to have a little [laughs] emotional breakdown. And then he opened the door, and he was like, "Oh, Mike's already here." And I'm like, "Oh, okay." So then I saw Mike- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... and then I immediately started crying, telling him my woes and- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... [laughs]. And it was slightly embarrassing, and, uh, also very Portia of me, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: It- it does sound, frankly, quite Portia, [laughs]. So did- were there any- Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... Portia and Haley overlaps? Was there any Haley that you used for Portia? Or any way you empathized with Portia? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, for sure. Oh, yeah. I mean, empathizing with a character you're playing is the most important thing, I think. Um, Portia maybe subconsciously was already maybe getting into my, like, being. Chloe Malle: Mm-hmm. Haley Lu Richardson: By the time I got- so maybe that's why I was so, [laughs] pitiful and dramatic- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... uh, when I first saw Mike. Definitely the- the misery, I was connecting to on that first day I met. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: And the self-pity, yeah, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: Tell me about working with Jennifer. Was that something- had you been a fan of hers for a while? Was- was she someone she worked with intimately to sort of work on Tanya and Portia's relationship? Wh- what- what did that look like? Haley Lu Richardson: Watching Tanya in the first season, I was just thinking, this is an ic- iconic actor- Chloe Malle: Mm-hmm. Haley Lu Richardson: ... [laughs], playing another one of her iconic characters. Chloe Malle: Right. Haley Lu Richardson: And then when I found out I got to, you know, be her assistant and watch that in person, and work with that, like, that's just so kinda surreal. And I was really nervous but also just excited, and Jennifer is such a unique and charming and just unexpected [laughs] and free woman, like [inaudible 00:35:35]. Chloe Malle: Is she like Tanya? Haley Lu Richardson: I mean, she's not a- an awful inconsiderate human being like Tanya, in any way. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Jennifer is an extremely charming, kind [laughs] la- lady. Uh. Chloe Malle: Hmm. Haley Lu Richardson: But definitely, the kind of eccentric, spontaneous- Chloe Malle: Right. Haley Lu Richardson: ... just free-ness, is- is very similar. That's just like, an innate thing that Jennifer has. Chloe Malle: Are you guys still in touch? Haley Lu Richardson: She's pretty bad at texting. Um, I will say [laughs], she's really bad at texting. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: So the last time I talked to her was at the premiere. But, oh, my gosh- Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: ... my parents were at the premiere, and my parents were so excited to meet Jennifer. She was like, the one person they were so excited. Chloe Malle: Interesting. What- what were they a fan of her from? Like, Christopher Guest movies, or? Haley Lu Richardson: I honestly don't know, probably multiple things. Probably all of it. Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: But they were just so exci- Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: ... and they also loved season one, too. Um, but they were just so- I think that's why they showed up [laughs] to the premiere. Chloe Malle: Now, the whole Internet is talking about Portia's outfits. Did you see this coming? [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Uh, [laughs]. Um, no, definitely not to this extent. Like, at all. Like, I feel like there's- there's other things that maybe people would pay [laughs] more attention to. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Do you think Portia's outfits are good or bad? Haley Lu Richardson: I stand by everything that we did- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... as a team to create Portia as a person and as a character. I think her outfits, and the way that she is represented through her style, is exactly who she is on the inside. And that's all that my goal is. But a lot of the conversation has been, honestly, really interesting for me, and I read things and I'm like, "Wow, this person really actually gets who Portia is, for better and for worse." And, you know, that was part of the intention. Chloe Malle: Where's the Venn diagram overlap between Haley's style and Portia's style? Are there any, like, items o- from your own wardrobe you brought in? Haley Lu Richardson: There's definitely an overlap. I do think I'm, like, an eclectic dresser, and I definitely like wearing colors. I like- I don't know how to match as a human being. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: So, I've kind of just, at a certain point, like when I first moved to LA when I was 16, um, I remember being like, "I should just give in to this inability to put things together properly, and I should just like, make- I should just surrender to the- the chaos." But, you know, I am a young woman, and I'm- I don't have it all together. And sometimes I succumb and buy something from an Instagram ad, you know? [laughs]. Chloe Malle: You know what? It happens to the best of us. Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. I was obviously drawn to things that I thought were kind of interesting or cute, so I would look at pieces of clothing in my fittings with Alex, the costume designer, and I would be drawn to certain things, kind of as me and Portia. Chloe Malle: Right. Haley Lu Richardson: And then, to make it fully Portia, I wanted to like, put it together and then add something, or multiple things that threw the whole thing off. Chloe Malle: It's like the opposite of the Coco Chanel saying, where she said, "Every time you're leaving the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off", [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, for sure, yeah. We put a- Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: ... couple things on. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: And we made those couple things were not what was supposed to go [laughs]. It's like- Chloe Malle: [laughs], yeah, exactly. Haley Lu Richardson: ... [inaudible 00:38:51] outfit. But you know, that's, uh, I think it makes so much sense for this girl. Chloe Malle: And then, I saw there was, you know, people really were very focused on your crochet bucket hat in one scene. Was that a Hooked by Haley hat? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh yeah, that's a- that's a- that's a creation, my own creation. Chloe Malle: Is Hooked by Haley active? I know that's your crochet Etsy. Haley Lu Richardson: That's my crochet Etsy. Yeah, I'm- I'm very sporadic on there, 'cause I just kind of go through phases if I'm working on something and I'm crocheting a bunch of things on set, or I'm not working and I'm just making a bunch of things in my house. Like, I just go through ... Chloe Malle: Did you make a bunch of things in Sicily? Haley Lu Richardson: I didn't. I brought, like, a whole entire carryon suitcase of yarn, and I didn't touch it the whole time, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: Okay. Haley Lu Richardson: But I did- I did make that hat, so. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: The only thing that I've really taken personally with the Portia outfit hate is the hate for that hat, because, you know- Chloe Malle: [laughs], 'cause you made it. Haley Lu Richardson: ... I love that thing. I made it, with my hands, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. Chloe Malle: Have you followed all the memes? Haley Lu Richardson: I haven't followed all of them; I got a little bit scared of social media after, like, a few episodes in, 'cause they were just, like, really, really mean to Portia, [laughs]. But I'm sure there are some good ones after this finale. Chloe Malle: Haley, we have a couple of questions that we ask everyone. One is, what's your biggest fashion regret, or fashion faux pas in recent memory? Haley Lu Richardson: Well, here's the thing. At the White Lotus premiere, everyone told me that I shouldn't wear this dress that I wore. Literally, everyone, like, my stylist wanted me to wear a different dress with different shoes, my friend told me that w- I looked like I wearing a Halloween costume and the dress. Like, everyone was telling me I shouldn't wear this dress. But I don't know if I'm just the kinda person that likes doing the thing that everyone tells me I shouldn't do, [laughs]. I just genuinely, like, felt so good in it. Like, I felt like- Chloe Malle: Well, then it's not a faux pas. Haley Lu Richardson: ... I put it on. Chloe Malle: Then it's- Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. But I looked back at the pictures and I was like, "Yeah, I definitely could've looked better." Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Um, but, you know, I- I don't fully regret it because I felt like such a fun time in that dress. Um. Chloe Malle: Who made this dress? Okay, I'm looking at it now. It's like a psychedelic mini dress with almost like a- Haley Lu Richardson: The front- Chloe Malle: ... full-sized print- Haley Lu Richardson: Yes. Chloe Malle: ... and crazy feather cuffs. Haley Lu Richardson: Yes. Chloe Malle: Wow. Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. I know. Chloe Malle: It's cool. Haley Lu Richardson: Wh- you think? Chloe Malle: Yeah. It's like Portia grew up. Haley Lu Richardson: It kinda feels like a spin on Portia which I kind of liked. Chloe Malle: Yeah. Haley Lu Richardson: But also it felt like, the White Lotus premiere felt like fun, like a good time. Chloe Malle: Totally. Haley Lu Richardson: And I just like, wanted to have a freakin' good time, and I did. Chloe Malle: Who makes this dress. Haley Lu Richardson: Um, it's Moschino, is that how you say it? Chloe Malle: Okay, yeah. Yep. Haley Lu Richardson: Okay. Chloe Malle: What's the next- Haley Lu Richardson: Yeah. Chloe Malle: ... character that you're excited about playing? Haley Lu Richardson: Oh, man. I just wanna do good shit, that's all I want. Also, I wanna dance. I wanna dance in- in movies. Chloe Malle: Oh, that's fun. Haley Lu Richardson: That's a good- yeah. Chloe Malle: All right, everyone listening, Haley's ready to dance. Haley Lu Richardson: All I wanna do is dance, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Somebody lemme dance, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. All right, Haley, have a great COVID test, [laughs], and a great holiday. Haley Lu Richardson: [laughs]. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: Happy New Year, happy holidays, and, um, yeah. Have a great life. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: [laughs]. I'm pretty sure that's one of Portia's lines in the show, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: [laughs]. Haley Lu Richardson: But yeah, really, do, [laughs]. Chloe Malle: [laughs], thank you. All right. Bye.
